BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Three people were detained after a 2-year-old boy shot himself with his parents’ weapon, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the scene Sunday afternoon in the 6400 block of Candleview Court in northeast Bexar County. BCSO said the boy shot the weapon, grazing himself in the face.

The boy was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said at the scene.

The parents and an older sibling of the boy were detained inside the residence, Salazar said.

The older sibling, who is in their late teens, is facing a tampering with evidence charge for allegedly trying to hide the weapon. Salazar said deputies were able to locate the weapon between a tree and privacy fence on the property.

The parents are not currently facing charges, Salazar said, noting that could change as the investigation continues.

Salazar said Texas Child Protective Services has been notified of the case.

“Responsible gun ownership is a 24-hour endeavor,” Salazar said.

This is a developing story; check back for updates.
