‘Intense congestion’ expected on the Mass. Pike for 2 upcoming weekends

Travelers should anticipate some heavy traffic along the Massachusetts Turnpike during two upcoming weekends, while state officials replace a bridge, NBC 10 Boston reported.

Beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 30, until the following Monday, June 2 at 5 a.m., and again from June 20 to June 23, all but one lane will be shut down in both directions between exits 123 and 125, a Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokesperson told MassLive.

This will allow workers to replace a bridge carrying the highway over the MBTA Commuter Rail Tracks, according to MassDOT’s website. The focus on the bridge is part of the larger Interstate 90 and Interstate 95 Interchange project, in which five bridges will be replaced, one to be rehabilitated and two will have their superstructure replaced.

But heavy delays are expected.

“We know that the major delays that could be experienced through this area are inconvenient,” Jonathan Gulliver, MassDOT’s highway administrator, said at a news conference.

Those who hit the road should anticipate “intense congestion on this area of the Turnpike for both of these weekends,” with backups likely being between two to three hours, Gulliver said

Additionally, commuter trains on the Worcester line will be shut down while work is conducted, NBC reported. Free shuttle buses will replace the Amtrak service to Albany, which will also be impacted by the project.

MassLive reached out to MassDOT for more information.
