The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office seeks help in identifying additional victims in an indecent exposure investigation at Publix in Sherrill’s Ford.

NEWTON, N.C. — The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying additional victims in an ongoing indecent exposure investigation.

These reports involved inappropriate and unlawful exposure at the Publix grocery store in Sherrill’s Ford.

Investigating deputies said they believe additional incidents have not yet been reported.

Matthew Elijah Newell, 23, of Sherrills Ford, has been charged with three counts of Misdemeanor Indecent Exposure and two counts of Felony Flee to Elude Arrest related to the case.

Newell is currently being held in the Catawba County Detention Facility under a $35,000 secured bond. His court appearance is scheduled for Friday.

“We are committed to protecting our community and ensuring that anyone who may have been affected by these acts feels safe coming forward. We encourage anyone with information to contact our office,” Sheriff Don Brown said in a statement.

The Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behavior or believes they may have been a victim of indecent exposure involving Newell to come forward.

Individuals with information are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 828-464-3112 or email Sergeant K. Lawrence at [email protected].

WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
