Houston, Texas – This weekend, the Houston Dynamo are celebrating a major milestone — 20 years of Major League Soccer right here in Houston.
Fans attending the match against Seattle Sounders FC can look forward to a number of special events, including a chance to meet Dynamo legends around the stadium and during the game.
Dynamo President Pat Onstad and Assistant General Manager Nick Kowba reflected on the club’s journey and the significance of this anniversary.
Kowba, who’s been with the organization since its move from San Jose said, “It’s been an incredible journey… I feel super fortunate to still be here.”
He credited leaders like Fred Segal and Chris Canetti — now president of the FIFA World Cup Committee — for mentoring him early in his career. He also acknowledged the club’s former head coach Dominic Kinnear and current president Pat Onstad as key figures in the Dynamo’s development over the years.“It’s been an amazing run… to be here and see all these talented players coming back.”
The club has planned a special Fan Fest and alumni weekend. One highlight includes a bobblehead of Onstad, which he noted commemorates a significant moment in club history:
“This pose is really significant… it’s a throwback to a pretty incredible game — I stopped a penalty that won us the title.”
Onstad said the event will include appearances by former stars like Dwayne De Rosario and other alumni:
“This is a big moment for our club… we’re working really hard to get back to those glory days.”
Onstad said the organization has made it a priority to be more competitive and visible in the community:
“You’ll see fans connect with the team this year — that’s from the effort they’ve put into the community: reading books in schools, signing autographs.”
Nick reflected on the 20-year mark:
“It’s flown by. A lot of memories, lots of success, some dark days… The team is back — made the playoffs the last two years, won an Open Cup — and we’re adding to the trophy case.”
Shell Energy Stadium also plays a big part in the experience. Onstad described it as
“an amazing environment,”highlighting the energy of local supporters like El Batallón and the nonstop drumming and orange smoke that make Dynamo matches unforgettable.
The celebrations continue off the field too. Former player Mike Chabala has helped organize a five-on-five tournament at Discovery Green, where fans will get a rare chance to play against Dynamo alumni.
“It’s a great opportunity to go meet past and present Dynamo players… but you do need to sign up in advance.”
From heartfelt reunions with Dynamo greats to family-friendly activities and competitive fun, this anniversary weekend is shaping up to be a true celebration of Houston’s soccer legacy.
