COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — As the “Hops on High” festival returned to the Short North this weekend, Columbus police ramped up their security efforts to ensure the safety of attendees. The event, which marks the beginning of the summer festival season, saw an increased presence of both visible and undercover officers, along with additional cameras and lighting along High Street.
Michele Catania, expressed her enjoyment of the event, saying it was “fun, very nice and not raining.”
Anjel Wiingz, another attendee, shared her positive experience, stating, “I’ve been enjoying being with my kids we’re down here on High street we just had some brunch had some mimosas so yeah the weather we’re just enjoying the vibes.”
The festival featured more than 80 local vendors, attracting patrons from all over. Charles Allen, a visitor from Northeast Ohio, described the scene as “very eclectic,” noting the presence of street artists, dancers on stilts, and disco balls.
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther emphasized the city’s commitment to safety, announcing an unprecedented number of police officers, as well as enhanced lighting and surveillance throughout the Short North this summer. Betsy Pandora from the Short North Alliance highlighted the collaborative effort, saying, “It’s a real partnership and we’re all working together.”
Wiingz also commented on the safety of the area, particularly during the day, saying, “When we come down here during the day we never had any issues,” and added, “I feel safe when I come down here with my kids.”
With the festival season officially underway, the Short North is prepared for the upcoming events. Pandora remarked, “Columbus is a city ranked for having more festivals and events than anywhere else in the country and it sure feels like it today.”
The next “Hops on High” is scheduled for September 6, with more events planned throughout the summer.
