Rain increasing tonight, wet start to the week

JAKCOSNVILLE, FLA – Scattered thunderstorms have been developing inland across the northern part of Florida and the southern part of Georgia this afternoon, but more organized rain is working northward from Central Florida.

Expect this rain to spread into our area between sunset and 10 p.m., with periods of moderate to heavy rain likely overnight. Some storms may produce gusty winds, followed by lingering lighter showers into early Monday morning.

A moisture-rich weather system over the Deep South will continue to pump Gulf moisture into the region, bringing a 100% chance of rain on Monday. Showers and storms will be on and off through the morning, then pick up in intensity Monday afternoon before tapering off as the storms track offshore Monday evening.

Rain forecast at 11 pm Sunday night.

Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected through Monday evening, with locally higher amounts possible, especially in any slow-moving storms. Rain will linger into Tuesday in a more scattered fashion before drier air returns Wednesday.

A frontal boundary currently over the eastern Gulf will move across our area late Monday night, helping to clear out the wet weather by mid-week. Expect breezy south to southeasterly winds tonight, shifting to southerly on Monday.

High temperatures will remain mild in the low to mid-80s early this week, with overnight lows in the 60s inland. Heat builds later this week, with temperatures climbing back into the low to mid-90s by Friday.
