HOUSTON – HCC Coleman College’s simulation lab is a cutting-edge facility designed to provide students with hands-on, real-world experiences that elevate their careers in health sciences. Dr. Lutricia Harrison, President of HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences, said the campus reflects HCC’s commitment to preparing students for various health fields by providing real-world experiences.

The simulation lab is designed to resemble a hospital environment, facilitating a seamless transition for students entering the healthcare sector. Dr. Harrison noted, “We wanted to build the facility to truly look like a hospital so that the students can have an easier transition into the hospital setting.”

The lab includes a fully equipped operating room where students from programs such as Surgical Technology, Nursing, and Radiography can gain practical experience. “These patients are truly simulated to where they get a real-world experience,” Dr. Harrison explained, highlighting the advanced equipment available for training.

In addition to technical skills, the college emphasizes collaboration among students. On April 5, students will participate in a “hospital day,” where they will work together to simulate a real hospital environment. This experience fosters teamwork, which is essential in healthcare settings. “Even though you’re an individual in your respective fields, you still work as a team,” Dr. Harrison said.

The simulation lab features a birthing center where students can observe and participate in the birthing process using advanced mannequins. “They get the real-world experience where they may not experience that in the hospital,” Dr. Harrison explained. This safe environment allows students to practice essential skills without the pressure of a clinical setting.

Ideal candidates for HCC Coleman College are those with a passion for caring for others. Dr. Harrison emphasized the importance of compassion and a nurturing spirit in healthcare. “Students who are interested in taking care of someone else have to have that compassion,” she said.

The college offers a variety of programs, including health information technology and telemetry, catering to students who may prefer less direct patient care. Additionally, HCC Coleman College recently introduced a Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Care Management, expanding opportunities for students in the healthcare field.

Located in the heart of Houston’s renowned Medical Center, HCC Coleman College stands out as the only two-year college in the Texas Medical Center. This unique position underscores the college’s commitment to academic rigor and student success.

Enrollment is currently open for summer and fall sessions. Interested students can apply at hccs.edu/health. Dr. Harrison and her team look forward to welcoming new students to the innovative learning environment at HCC Coleman College.

For middle and high school students, HCC is hosting the Brighter Futures Summer Day Camp in June this year at the Coleman College campus. This is a free, weeklong learning event. Find out more at hccs.edu/health.
