JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville councilman Matt Carlucci has announced a meeting to discuss the need for increased competition in council leadership roles, expressing concern over the lack of competitive elections.

“Part of my concern has been with it over the last few years, we have had very little competition for leadership,” Carlucci said.
He noted that typically, only a couple of council members run for vice president, and the winner often ascends to council president without significant challenge.
“You have better leadership when you have competition,” he explained, emphasizing that the current process resembles a “succession of leadership” where candidates often secure votes before discussions even begin.
“Partisanship, I have said forever, I don’t believe that belongs in local politics,” Carlucci said, noting that the focus should be on serving constituents and the community rather than political affiliations.
His concerns were further underscored by recent events, including the handling of a gun registry currently under investigation and the council’s response to students advocating for educational funding.
In a recent council meeting, students were not allowed to speak before a resolution regarding funding for education programs including Advanced Placement courses was voted down.
“What bothered me was that a political tactical procedure was used to move the bill forward before the kids had a chance to vote,” Carlucci said.
He emphasized the importance of encouraging civic participation among students, stating, “We should be lifting up our students and not politically blocking their future.”
