Denver text scam includes fake jury duty, court dates

Denver residents are being targeted by scammers pretending to be court officials contacting them about jury duty or other hearings, according to the Denver Sheriff Department.

The scheme involves scammers texting the victim multiple times about a court date or jury summons and including a link to a survey to opt out.

If victims click the link, scammers may be able to access their personal information and device and ask for payment.

The scammers are “very persistent,” sheriff’s officials said, and will likely send a series of three texts that ask the victim if they’ve made plans to attend court tomorrow, a “friendly reminder” of their scheduled court date and a third final reminder.

People should not click the link in the message but report messages to police and the Colorado Attorney General’s Office at stopfraudcolorado.gov or 720-913-9179.

Court officials will never call or text to collect fines without sending written documentation, and people should never pay money over the phone to someone claiming to represent the court, the sheriff’s department said.

Denver residents can check if they have a jury summons by emailing [email protected] or calling 303-606-2305.
