Recipients are receiving Social Security payments later than usual in May. Here’s why.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Some people may be getting their Social Security checks later than usual this month.
Verify’s gotten a lot of questions as to why Social Security benefits are being delivered later in May. Because the month started on Thursday, officials say recipients will see their checks later in the month.

For the most part, Social Security payments are issued on Wednesdays. If your birth date falls between May 1-10, you’ll be paid on the second Wednesday, which is May 14. For folks born May 11-20, they’ll be paid on May 21. And finally, anyone born between May 21-31, they’ll be paid on May 28.
This is the latest it will ever be on any given month.
Retirees who get Supplemental Security Income checks are getting two additional checks in the month of May, one for May and another for June, due to other quirks in the calendar.
If you don’t receive your payment on the exact date SSA said you should allow three additional mailing days before contacting social security.
