LEWIS CENTER, Ohio (WSYX) — The U.S. Secretary of Labor was on hand in Delaware County Monday as McDonald’s announced it would add 375,000 jobs this year, including more than 20,000 in Ohio. The fast food giant also touted its ten-year-old tuition assistance program.
“It’s the best first job, right here at McDonald’s,” said Lori Chavez-DeRemer, the Secretary of Labor.
But can you live in Ohio on a job at McDonald’s?
The employment website Indeed.com reports that an entry-level job at the fast food restaurant averages $13.25 per hour, for a full-time, yearly total of $27,560. A general manager can make an average of $55,085 yearly, according to the site. That entry-level salary could make it tough to earn enough for an average two-bedroom apartment. Apartments.com reports the average rent for a two-bedroom is $1360 per month, nearly 60 percent of that entry-level wage. Most financial experts warn against spending more than 30 percent of income on rent.
Chavez did not take questions at a press event. However, Lt. Governor Jim Tressel was on hand. He said every job is important.
“We always talk about the fact that we need every Ohioan, we need every type of job. These jobs are great experience,” he said.
But can you live off an entry-level McDonald’s job?
“I know a lot of people can get great experiences and they can get some income,” he said. “A lot of them I’ve seen have elevated into management.”
