Indian Trail council member Todd Barber faces a censure hearing over alleged ties to a Facebook page accused of spreading false claims about town officials.

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — The Indian Trail Town Council is expected to decide Tuesday night whether to formally censure Council member Todd Barber over his alleged involvement with a controversial Facebook page that town leaders say spreads misinformation and targets local officials.

The page, called “The Indian Trail Weasel Report,” has been a point of tension in the community for months.

The town council hired an attorney and an investigation found that while Barber claims his wife runs the account, he still bears some responsibility for the content it publishes.

That connection, officials argue, raises serious concerns about a conflict of interest and a potential violation of the town’s ethics policy, which requires elected officials to share information that is truthful and objective.

Town leaders say the page has posted what they describe as “false and damaging claims” about town staff and operations. The controversy has been discussed in multiple council meetings and has prompted calls for accountability and unity.

Mayor Pro Tem Dennis Gay expressed hope last month that today’s hearing will help restore focus and cooperation within the council.

“We have a lot of amenities that we’re wanting to work on for people in the town, like a community center,” Gay said. “We’ve got a lot of improvements that we need to do, and all this infighting and negativity does not promote what we’d like for the people here.”

If the council votes to censure Barber, it would serve as a formal public reprimand, though it would not remove him from office.

The censure resolution will be discussed during the council’s regular meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13.
