ENFIELD, Conn. — MassMutual sold its former office complex right near the state line earlier this month for just shy of $4 million.
The property sold to an affiliate of real estate developer Michael Massimino, according to papers filed May 5 with the town and documents on file with the state of Connecticut. The price was $3.996 million.
The property is assessed at $22.6 million, according to an advertisement for its sale.
A different developer, Andrew Borgia of Fast Track Realty, had pitched a plan to transform the property into a sports complex. But officials at the town Planning Department said Wednesday that permits for it have expired, and they have not heard anything about a sports complex for months.
Massimino’s company, MB Financial in Branford, already lists the property at 100 Bright Meadow Boulevard among its portfolio of properties. That includes a Stamford building that was once the headquarters of the WWE, along with other office properties and parking structures around the Nutmeg State.

Springfield, Massachusetts-based MassMutual had the 66-acre, half-million-square-foot complex overlooking Interstate 91 on the market for six years. In December 2018, the Bright Meadow Campus was pegged at $48.4 million, making it Enfield’s highest-value property.
MassMutual had announced in February 2018 that it was closing the Enfield offices to consolidate local operations at its headquarters on State Street in Springfield, in exchange for $46 million in economic development tax incentives from the commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The Bright Meadows Campus has enough space for 2,200 employees in its three buildings, and a sales brochure boasts that the infrastructure would support a fourth building. The 5,000-square-foot data center could be expanded to 20,000 square feet to accommodate high-tech uses, the sales brochure says.
The campus has its own parking garage, helipad and child care center, along with redundant power supplies. It’s got a fitness center, an executive client service center and a cafe. It has an entrance right off highway Exit 49 and is 7 miles from Springfield, 12 miles from Bradley International Airport and 15 miles from downtown Hartford.
It was once the primary office spaces for MassMutual’s retirement services and workplace insurance businesses.
In 2014, MassMutual unveiled more than $38 million in renovations at the Enfield campus.
MassMutual moved into the Enfield offices in 2004 after buying it from Phoenix Home Life Insurance Co. for $27.5 million.
Empower Retirement bought MassMutual’s retirement plan business in 2021 and for a time kept employees based in Enfield.
