Nassau County man accused of killing family in 2021 pleads guilty, sentenced to life in prison

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – A man accused of fatally shooting his wife and their adult daughter and son at their Nassau County home in 2021 has pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and will spend the rest of his life in prison.

William Broyles had undergone multiple psychological exams to determine whether he was competent to stand trial.

Last year, the State Attorney’s Office accused Broyles of exaggerating his symptoms to avoid prosecution and a possible death penalty sentence if convicted.

Assistant State Attorney Alan Mizrahi said Broyles had no history of mental illness before the murders, and only after the murders was mental illness diagnosed.

Broyles was finally found competent, and State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced this week that he had pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.

Court documents show that on Dec. 1, 2021, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call from Broyles, who told dispatchers he had shot his wife, son and daughter, and that he was outside waiting for police in his driveway.

When officers responded to Broyles’ Callahan home, they found him lying on his back in the driveway, where he was detained.

Inside, officers found Broyles’ 57-year-old wife, 27-year-old daughter and 28-year-old son dead from gunshot wounds.

Investigators said that Broyles admitted to shooting the three and went into detail as to how he committed the crimes.
