BREMERTON, Wash. — Gunfire erupted while Kitsap County deputies were investigating a report of a prowler in the Bremerton area Wednesday night.
The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) said at 11:30 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call from a mobile surveillance company employee who reported a possible prowler in the parking lot of the Fred Meyer store in the 5000 block of State Route 303 in unincorporated Bremerton.
While investigating and contacting a man, shots were fired, and the man was hit. That man was stable when he was taken to the hospital.
Video from the scene showed numerous evidence markers scattered in the parking lot and on top of a car, which was towed from the scene. Investigators were also seen collecting evidence and placing it into paper bags.
“It’s not clear if the car was impounded as you saw, they were awaiting a search warrant to have a look inside. There may be firearms inside, that hasn’t been confirmed,” said KCSO spokesperson Kevin McCarty.
McCarty could not confirm whether a Taser was used on the suspect before the shots were fired.
The Kitsap County Incident Response Team is investigating.
No law enforcement officers were hurt.
The incident is the second officer-involved shooting within five years.
