The suspect allegedly told his father he shot and killed his friend after they got into a fight over a girl.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An 18-year-old was arrested in connection with a deadly shooting at a west Charlotte motel earlier this week, court documents show.

Tyler James Minor was charged with murder for his alleged role in a deadly shooting at the Charlotte Express Inn on Lucky Penny Street on May 12. CMPD officers responded to a reported shooting at the motel a little before 6 p.m. When officers arrived at the hotel, they found a man who’d been shot multiple times in Room 2207, according to an affidavit. The victim was identified as a 24-year-old man.

According to the affidavit, detectives at the scene spoke to the victim’s girlfriend, who said a man by the name of “Tay” had been staying with the victim at the motel for about a month. The woman told officers that a friend called her about 20 minutes before CMPD arrived and said Minor shot and killed her boyfriend. The victim’s girlfriend rushed to the room and saw him lying on the ground in the room. She said he was covered by a sheet with a pillow over his body.

Motel security was called and opened the room for the woman, who called 911 when her boyfriend was unresponsive. While detectives were talking to her, additional CMPD investigators learned about a call played by the suspect at 2:07 p.m. Minor allegedly told the dispatcher that he shot his friend and that the victim was “gone.” The affidavit also revealed that Minor’s father called police, telling them that he was bringing his son to speak with detectives about the shooting. Minor never made it, as he allegedly ran from his father’s car while on the way to CMPD headquarters. Minor’s father identified him as the suspect based on a recent picture of him.

The victim’s girlfriend also identified Minor based on the photo. The affidavit states that Minor’s father told officers about the conversation he had with his son, claiming that Tyler Minor told him she shot his friend after they got into a fight over a girl. Minor said the argument turned into a wrestling match for a gun, and that when he grabbed the gun, he shot his friend multiple times. Minor’s father said his son asked him what he’d do and that he picked him up at a nearby store on Freedom Drive.

Minor’s father told detectives that his son jumped out of the car once they got to Uptown and that his son wouldn’t answer any phone calls after that point. Mecklenburg County jail records show that Minor was arrested on Wednesday afternoon. He’s being held without bond following his first court appearance on Thursday.
