Could hourly garage fire delay plans for new 2,000-space, $92 million parking garage at JAX?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A month after the city of Jacksonville issued a permit for a third parking garage to be built at Jacksonville International Airport, a major fire Friday in the current hourly garage could throw a wrench in the construction timeline.

The city issued the permit on April 14 for contractor Balfour Beatty Construction LLC at a project cost of $92 million, the Jacksonville Daily Record reported.

The six-level reinforced concrete parking garage will add 2,000 spaces next to the existing six-level daily parking structure at the airport.

Construction was scheduled to be completed in June 2026, six months before the new six-gate Concourse B opens for service.

But after multiple cars caught fire Friday in the hourly parking garage at JAX, causing structural damage, it’s possible that timeline will be affected by a need to repair the current garage.

The fire broke out around noon, and a video from a News4JAX viewer showed flames roaring through an opening on the third floor.

The fire was under control a little before 1:30 p.m., according to Michael Stewart, who works with the Jacksonville Aviation Authority.

No injuries were reported, but the structural damage, which sources told News4JAX could involve a partial beam collapse, could complicate the airport’s new garage construction plans.

Stewart acknowledged when the permit was issued that the airport will experience some “tight days” as construction continues on the new garage, especially around the holidays.

“We usually announce to go online and see what’s available,” he said.

The garage will be located south of the hourly parking and daily parking garages.
