COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating a deadly police shooting involving Columbus SWAT officers.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers responded to a domestic violence call on the 4400 block of Hampton Woods Court Monday night.

According to police, the 911 caller reported hearing a male assaulting a female inside an apartment and threatening to kill her.

At 10:00 p.m., officers on the scene reported that a male suspect was firing at them from inside the apartment and a female hostage was also present. SWAT and hostage negotiators were called to assist.

A sergeant made contact with the suspect by phone, and negotiators spoke with him for over an hour in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully. During negotiations, the suspect fired shots at SWAT officers multiple times, according to police.

At 11:46 p.m. police said the male opened the door to the apartment with the female and a gun in his hand. The male raised the gun at which time multiple SWAT personnel discharged their firearms, striking him, according to police.

The female immediately ran to the officers. CPD said she was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the assault prior to the officers’ arrival.

The suspect’s identity has not been released.

This story will be updated.
