JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation announced that the completion date for the long-awaited construction of the interchange at Interstate 95 and Interstate 295 has been pushed back to spring 2026.

The $176.8 million project was started in 2016 to help improve traffic flow, safety and increase the capacity of a growing area.

It was originally supposed to be completed by summer 2020. However, it has been delayed several times due to weather, supply chain hold-ups and material shortages after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The last time it was delayed, officials had said it would be done this spring.

The goal of the new design is to allow for fewer lane changes on I-295 and add lanes to I-95 at the junction.

FDOT said two new lanes will open on I-95 between Cole Road and just north of Broward River.

I-95 will feature six northbound lanes through the interchange, a dedicated lane for motorists heading south on I-95 from Airport Road and accessing the I-295 eastbound flyover, and multiple exit ramps and on-ramps to flow traffic through the interchange.

FDOT said it expects to change the deadline again this fall to account for weather delays and holidays when work couldn’t be done.

As of May 15, crews were pouring concrete for the I-295 overpass at Main Street.
