Doctors explain Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis

Experts say Biden likely had prostate cancer for several years without knowing it.

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — We’re learning more about former President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis –and why doctors say his case is both rare and revealing.

Doctors say former President Biden’s cancer is an aggressive form that has spread to the bone. That’s uncommon—but not unheard of—for someone his age.

Most prostate cancers are caught early through routine screenings. But, in about 8% of cases, the cancer has already spread by the time it’s found.

Experts say Biden likely had prostate cancer for several years without knowing it.

A spokesperson says he was last screened in 2014 and his exam didn’t show any issues.

Some doctors don’t recommend them for men in their 70s or 80s. Others say longer lifespans make regular testing more important.

When caught late, treatment usually involves hormone therapy to slow the cancer’s growth. Doctors say most patients respond well for several years.

Survival is possible—even after a late-stage diagnosis.

Experts say Biden has multiple options and could still have quality years ahead.
