Logan Federico’s family asked attendees to wear something pink.
WAXHAW, N.C. — Loved ones honored the life of an aspiring student from Waxhaw who was killed earlier this month in Columbia, South Carolina.
The loved ones of 22-year-old Logan Federico held a memorial service Thursday afternoon along Sims Road, inviting people who loved her to wear something pink in her honor. Logan was hoping to become a teacher and was pursuing her education degree at South Piedmont Community College before her death.
“Logan brought joy, laughter, and boundless energy into our lives,” Federico’s obituary said. “She had a powerful presence—vibrant, spirited, and full of heart. Logan lived boldly, loved fiercely, and never hesitated to stand up for the underdog and causes she cared about.”
A GoFundMe has been established to assist with funeral expenses and “to begin a legacy in Logan’s name.” Frederico is survived by her parents Stephen and Melissa, as well as her younger brother, Jacob.
Attendees were asked to wear something pink to honor her memory.
Federico was killed while visiting friends in Columbia. WCNC Charlotte’s news partner WLTX News19 reports the suspect, 30-year-old Alexander Dickey, broke into a home near where Federico was visiting late in the night on May 3. He stole some keys and a firearm from that home, then broke into the home Federico was in. She was shot and killed, and her friends discovered her body around 11 a.m. on May 4. She died of a single gunshot to the chest.
WLTX reports that following the shooting, authorities said Dickey fled the scene in a stolen vehicle and used Federico’s debit and credit cards in two nearby counties.
When the stolen vehicle broke down, investigators said Dickey had it towed to a home in Gaston, South Carolina. That location later became the center of an overnight manhunt after he allegedly fled into the woods, stole another vehicle, and returned to the same home. Deputies said he then barricaded himself inside.
During the standoff, the house caught fire. Dickey was eventually located in a master bedroom, pulled through a window, and taken into custody, according to deputies. He was hospitalized for treatment and later booked into the Lexington County Detention Center. A warrant obtained by WLTX from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department confirmed those details.
Dickey is now charged in Richland County, South Carolina, with murder, multiple counts of burglary, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, grand larceny, and financial transaction card theft. Additional charges were filed in Lexington County, including first-degree burglary and second-degree arson.
Dickey appeared before a judge on May 13 in Columbia’s Municipal Court. Because he’s facing charges with a maximum penalty of life in prison, bond can only be set by a circuit court judge. That hearing will be scheduled for a later date.
Dickey acknowledged the judge’s questions with short responses but didn’t say anything else during the hearing. No one from the police, prosecutors, or the victim’s family spoke during the proceeding as well. However, friends and family of Federico, including her father, were present and spoke to WLTX afterward.
“Support from a community is hard to describe unless you go through it,” Stephen Federico said. “And we’re going through the worst of the worst right now. The amount of love that we have seen from our family, from our friends. From people we don’t even know, reaching out, because of our daughter, because of how special she was. This really is about her, and they’re making it about her. We’re not making it about us. She needs justice, swift justice, and that’s what they’re helping us get by giving us time to get that.”
