NEW ALBANY, Ohio (WSYX) — The halls of Marburn Academy were filled with applause as students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni gathered to honor Scott Burton, the school’s associate head, who retired after more than 40 years of dedicated service.

“I’ve been very blessed and privileged to be able to spend 40 years here at Marburn and be able to work with great colleagues,” Burton said. “I guess it comes with mixed emotions that I’m looking forward to retirement and spending more time with my family and my grandkids and being able to travel.”

Burton emphasized that the school was more than just a workplace. “It was home,” he said, adding that he hopes future teachers find a place as meaningful as Marburn has been to him.

“And so new people coming into the profession, I hope that they can find a place that’s as meaningful as Marburn has meant to me, where they’re passionate about what they do and who they serve,” he said.

Eldridge Carr, the head of school at Marburn, praised Burton’s contributions. “Scott has been instrumental in 40 years of educating students that learn differently,” Carr said.

He highlighted Burton’s philosophy, which has been a cornerstone of Marburn’s specialty in central Ohio.

“Not just from educational practices, but how to treat students with understanding and empathy and care and compassion,” Carr said.

Burton’s influence extended beyond students to teachers and administrators. “Everything that he stands for will live on in a number of people that he’s made deep connections with,” Carr said.

“It’s going to be tough coming into work someday, not seeing Scott here, but at the same time, I know that his legacy is going to burn bright for a long time,” Carr added.
