NOAA sounds alarm ahead of busy hurricane season

NOAA predicts up to 19 named storms in the Atlantic.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — We’re just days away from the start of hurricane season –and forecasters are sounding the alarm.

Forecasters say this hurricane season could be a busy one.

NOAA is predicting up to 19 named storms in the Atlantic. Of those, up to 10 could become hurricanes—and up to five could be major.

The forecast doesn’t say if, or where, they’ll hit. But experts say now is the time to get ready.

Above-average ocean temperatures are one big reason for the forecast. That extra heat helps fuel storms, and it’s linked to climate change.

Another factor: stronger winds off Africa that can spin up storms heading west.

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. Last year brought 18 named storms and 11 hurricanes—two of which caused deadly damage.

Even with staffing shortages at local offices, NOAA says the National Hurricane Center is fully prepared.

Bottom line—don’t wait until a storm is coming.

Stock up early, have a plan, and stay weather alert.
