NORTHAMPTON — Two of the old military munitions that forced the evacuation of a city building Thursday were found to pose no hazard.

And the risk that a third item could explode could not be determined, according to Jake Wark, spokesperson for the state’s fire marshal.

Employees of Memorial Hall were forced to evacuate Thursday after the discovery of dormant explosives in the building’s basement.

It is unclear how the munitions were discovered, but a 911 call came into police just before 4 p.m. Thursday.

Wark said the call related to three pieces “of what appeared to be unexploded military ordnance.”

He said State Police bomb technicians used a visual inspection and x-ray diagnostics. Two items were deemed safe.

“But the operability of the third could not be established. Techs removed it from the scene for safe disposal offsite‚” Wark said.

Emergency responders from Northampton did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

Northampton police said the call about the explosive devices came in around 3:15 p.m.

Massachusetts State Police and the Northampton Fire Department cleared the building.

The city’s Central Services Department works out of the hall, which is two buildings down from City Hall on Main Street. It also houses veterans services, city human resources and mail services.

Northampton emergency officials did not respond Friday to calls for comment.
