CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A homicide investigation is ongoing after a shooting was reported in north Charlotte late Saturday night.
Initially, Medic confirmed it responded to North Graham Street near West Craighead Road around 9 p.m. The agency said at the time that one person had been taken to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
Roughly an hour later, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department shared the scene was being investigated as a homicide. It wasn’t immediately clear if the person who was hospitalized had died.
A WCNC Charlotte photographer was able to capture video from the scene. Officers were seen at a convenience store, focusing on a dark red sedan that appeared to have had its window glass shattered.
During a news briefing near the convenience store, CMPD shared more information. Officers said two people in the car were shot around 8:30 p.m. along West Sugar Creek Road and Reagan Drive, but the driver got them to the convenience store along North Graham Street several blocks away while calling 9-1-1. CMPD confirmed the person who was taken to the hospital later succumbed to their injuries. The victim who died has not been identified, but the department said the victim was in their 20s.
The condition of the second victim wasn’t immediately clear.
CMPD said it’s still working to figure out a motive behind the shooting, and said that the fact the shooting unfolded in one location while the victims got to another initially complicated the investigation. However, officers said they were able to find evidence in the initial area along Reagan Drive that backed up what they were told.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police at (704) 432-TIPS or leave a tip with Crime Stoppers online or by calling (704) 334-1600.
