MARENGO, Ohio (WSYX) — The Morrow County sheriff’s voice broke a number of times as revealed to media the name of his deputy who was shot and killed Monday night near Marengo as he responded to a domestic violence call.

Sheriff John Hinton described Deputy Daniel Sherrer as someone who loved his job and his community.

“We hired him in 2021,” Hinton said. “And he was a godsend for this Sheriff’s Office, this community, this county.”

Sherrer was 31 and leaves behind his mother and father, who live nearby. This was his first law enforcement job.

Hinton described Sherrer as positive and upbeat.

“Always had a smile on his face, never in a bad mood,” Hinton said. “He came to work every day, he loved this community, he loved the job.”

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, fellow deputies began placing black tape across the sheriff’s star on the sides of police cruisers here. Neighbors began to place flowers and momentos at a cruiser parked on the front lawn of the sheriff’s office in Sherrer’s honor.

Phillip Stanley was emotional as he tied ribbons to the car, despite the fact that he didn’t know Sherrer personally. Stanley’s son works for the Morrow County Sheriff and thought highly of Sherrer.

“(My son) talked about how the deputy was a good guy,” Stanley said. “He said he was a great guy, always good to be around.”

“All LEOs (law enforcement officers) go into it knowing that it is a risk, but it’s just something that shouldn’t happen,” Stanley said. “It should never happen.”

Sherrer’s body is at the Montgomery County Coroner’s office in Dayton. Plans for a procession back to Central Ohio and funeral arrangements have not been announced.
