Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ would wipe out state AI laws for federal regulation

Supporters say state laws are moving too fast and could hurt innovation, but critics argue states need flexibility to protect against deepfakes and scams.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new push in Washington could reshape how artificial intelligence is regulated across the country — and it’s sparking debate on both sides of the aisle.

A new bill backed by President Donald Trump could block efforts to regulate artificial intelligence. Tucked inside the $500 million proposal is a ban on state-led AI regulation, even ones already on the books.

Instead, the goal is to push for federal control over how AI is governed.

Supporters say state laws are moving too fast and could hurt innovation, but critics argue states need flexibility to protect against deepfakes, scams and bias in hiring and policing.

Even some Republicans, like Sens. Josh Hawley and Marsha Blackburn, are pushing back against the legislation. They say states should be allowed to test their own AI rules until a national plan is in place.

Right now, over 30 states have passed AI-related laws with even more under review. Trump’s proposal would wipe them out. The bill passed the House by just one vote and now heads to the Senate.
