A passenger died in a crash on I-77 in Iredell County, with charges pending for the driver.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A passenger died following a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 77 South in Iredell County on Friday evening, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 8:20 p.m. near mile marker 39, south of Mooresville. A 2002 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck traveling southbound lost control and veered off the right side of the highway before striking a tree on the passenger side, highway patrol officials said.

The driver, Floyd Dale Davis II, 39, of Newton, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. His passenger, Timmy Hillard Hartsoe Jr., 43, of Conover, was also transported to a hospital but died from his injuries.

Highway Patrol investigators say speed and impairment appear to have contributed to the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending following consultation with the Iredell County District Attorney’s office.

The southbound lanes of I-77 were closed in the area for about two hours while authorities investigated the scene and cleared the wreckage.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
