Rockies option struggling Michael Toglia to Triple-A Albuquerque

The search for consistency means Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia is headed down to Triple-A Albuquerque for a major tuneup. The Rockies optioned Toglia on Saturday.

Big things were expected of Toglia this season, but he’s been one of the Rockies’ biggest disappointments as the club spiraled to the worst start in big-league history. Toglia, 26, the Rockies’ first-round pick in 2019, has slashed just .194/.266/.349 with six home runs over 207 plate appearances. He’s struck out 81 times at an alarming rate of 39.1%. On the road, he’s slashed .124/.198/.206 with two homers and a 48% strikeout rate.

Manager Warren Schaeffer told reporters in New York, where the Rockies played the Mets on Saturday afternoon, that Toglia will go to Albuquerque to work on his approach, swing and mechanics.

In other roster moves, Colorado selected the contract of infielder Keston Hiura, moving him to the big-league roster from Triple-A, and it also designated infielder Aaron Schunk for assignment.

Hiura, like Toglia, was viewed as a hot prospect. He had a solid rookie season in 2019 for the Brewers but has generated a meager .203/.287/.384 slashline since 2020. Like Toglia, Hiura has been plagued by strikeouts, with a 36% K-rate for his career. Hiura joined Colorado on a minor league deal this past winter.

Playing primarily as the Isotopes first baseman, Hiura swung a hot bat in May, slashing .345/.427/.726 with six doubles, a triple, and eight home runs.

Colorado drafted Schunk in the second round (62nd overall) in 2019. He made his major league debut last season, and has a .230/.254/.311 slash line over 127 plate appearances during the 2024-25 seasons, while playing at second, third and shortstop.
