Martin Pollio, superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky, will serve as Ivy Tech Community College’s new president.
The college’s board of trustees voted April 30 to approve Pollio as president.
“Ivy Tech is doing great things in Indiana,” Pollio said in a news release. “I’m honored to be joining such a strong institution, and I’m ready to continue building more value for students and communities across the state.”
Pollio will take over for current Ivy Tech President Sue Ellspermann, the former lieutenant governor of Indiana. Ellspermann became president of Ivy Tech in 2016 and announced her retirement last June.
Pollio attended Indiana University for his undergraduate degree. Prior to taking over as superintendent in 2018, he worked as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in the Louisville area. He announced that he would retire from Jefferson County Public Schools in September.
The news release said that Pollio was chosen in part because of his experience creating successful workforce readiness programs.
“Marty Pollio is a results-driven, dynamic leader with immense heart and passion for students,” said Andrew Wilson, chair of the state board of trustees. “We are confident he will build on the innovation and growth we’ve experienced in the last decade and bolster our ability to help more Hoosiers achieve their academic and career goals.”
According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, Pollio helped implement workforce training programs at over two dozen middle and high schools in Louisville. Pollio also told the Courier-Journal he plans to continue expanding the college’s dual enrollment program, which lets high school students take college-level courses at Ivy Tech.
Pollio will start his new role July 1.
