Trying to make sense of hundreds of legislative bills and a 178-page state budget is hard work.
To help make sense of it all, Arika Herron from Axios Indianapolis recently came by the Mirror Indy studio. She discussed with local government reporter Peter Blanchard how this year’s legislative session could impact Indy residents.
It was a busy 2025 legislative session. Indiana lawmakers crafted legislation aimed at giving Hoosiers property tax relief at the expense of revenue for local governments. They increased the state’s cigarette tax by $2 per pack and cut funding for local health departments after President Donald Trump’s tariffs led to a bleak revenue forecast. They also crafted the state’s budget for the next two years.
It was also a consequential session for public schools in Indianapolis. Lawmakers passed legislation to create a new education alliance led by Mayor Joe Hogsett, who will chair the board. The group will decide — mostly behind closed doors — how to share school buses and buildings between district and public charter schools.
