The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) is advising AEP Ohio customers to scrutinize their utility bills as a new pricing structure is set to take effect on June 1, 2025. The upcoming changes will see residential rates increase by nearly 2 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), bringing the cost to $0.0997 per kWh for those not enrolled in a government aggregation program or with a competitive supplier.
“It is important for consumers to be aware of pricing changes impacting their electricity bills this summer,” said PUCO Chair Jenifer French. “The PUCO is available to assist Ohioans to understand their electric bill, and what options they have to manage their bills year round.”
The standard service offer rates, also known as default rates, reflect the cost of energy delivered by local utilities. AEP Ohio conducts periodic auctions where wholesale suppliers bid to provide power, and by law, AEP Ohio must pass these costs to consumers without profit.
Most AEP Ohio customers have the option to select their energy supplier. The “price-to-compare” (PTC) on monthly utility bills helps residential customers evaluate if switching suppliers could result in savings.
Energy Choice Ohio’s Apples-to-Apples charts allow consumers to compare competitive supplier offers alongside their utility’s standard service offer. Information such as rate per kWh, contract length, renewable energy content, and fees are available for comparison.
For those not choosing a competitive supplier or local government aggregation program, service will continue under the local utility’s standard service offer.
