22-year-old Logan Federico was shot and killed during a weekend trip to Columbia to visit friends.

WAXHAW, N.C. — A Waxhaw father spent Tuesday making funeral arrangements for his 22-year-old daughter, who authorities say was fatally shot during a home invasion in Columbia, South Carolina.

“I can’t believe I’m here,” said Stephen Federico as he visited a funeral home to select flowers and a casket for his daughter, Logan Federico.

Logan had taken a weekend trip to Columbia when tragedy struck. According to police, 30-year-old Alexander Dickey broke into the house where Logan and her friends were staying after they returned from a night out. Authorities say Dickey shot Logan with a gun that had been stolen from another residence.

“No one is going to pinch me and I’m not going to wake up, think about that,” Federico said, grappling with the sudden loss of his daughter.

The grieving father described the surreal experience of selecting the final dress his daughter would wear.

“I can’t believe I had to do that today. I can’t believe I’m going to have to continue doing it until it’s done,” he said.

Federico said he is now channeling his grief into action, planning to advocate for improved safety measures at colleges and universities.

“She’s speaking through me. I’m going to figure out how to make kids safer at colleges, in campuses and frat houses,” Federico said, determined to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies.

Dickey faces multiple charges, including murder, burglary, and second-degree arson. He was denied bond and remains in custody at the Lexington County jail.

For Stephen Federico, what began as a father’s worst nightmare has now become his life’s mission — ensuring other young people return home safely to their families.
