The public will get another opportunity to weigh in on a proposed housing development in Perry Township.
City-County Councilor Michael Dilk, a Republican who represents the area, delayed a vote on a rezoning petition for the project during the council’s meeting on May 5.
That means the council will hold a public hearing on the petition during its next meeting on June 9.
Some neighbors launched a campaign to either stop development altogether or to change parts of the plan. Their concerns range from increased traffic to the potential environmental impact. Dilk has been among those contesting the project, writing in a letter to the Metropolitan Development Commission that the area already has enough residential development.
The housing project is planned on an urban forest near the southern edge of Marion County. The 61-acre forest has three wetlands, although flooding remains a problem anyway.
The development commission approved the rezoning petition for the project in April.
“This project is not just a zoning change,” nearby resident Leslie Cuma-Fontaine told the commission’s hearing examiner in February. “It’s a direct threat to public safety, environmental stability and the long-term well-being of our communities.”
The new homes would range from 1,400 to 2,300 square feet and have an estimated average sale price of $400,000. Plans filed with the city show at least portions of all three wetlands being preserved.
Indianapolis-based homebuilder Davis Homes is the developer.
