Thousands of volunteers gathered to handcraft beds for children across 16 states.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Thousands of Lowe’s associates, volunteers from Lowe’s vendor partners and the greater Charlotte business community are descending on the Charlotte Convention Center to launch a large-scale, 24-hour effort to handcraft thousands of beds for children in need. The record-breaking event is hosted in partnership with the company’s national nonprofit partner, Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

The handcrafted beds, along with mattresses and pillows, built at the Lowe’s 24-Hour Bed Build will be distributed to Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapters in 49 communities across 16 states — including here in the greater Charlotte area.

During the event, 14 “trains” of volunteers across six shifts will simultaneously cut, drill and stain to build thousands of beds – setting a record for Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Throughout the event more than 120,564 pieces of lumber will be used to build headboards and siderails – adding up to more than 96 miles of lumber.

An estimated 7 million children across the U.S. do not have a bed to call their own. Sleep in Heavenly Peace works with volunteers across the country to address this critical issue. Through this event, Lowe’s and the Charlotte community are rallying behind Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s important mission that no child sleeps on the floor in our town.
