A city of Dallas deputy marshal shot and killed an “aggressive” coyote near a “populated area of the Katy Trail” on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The marshal was working in the area near Reverchon Park when a man walking his dogs reported that he had just been approached by the coyote, Rick Ericson, a city of Dallas public information officer, said in a statement.

Ericson said the marshal searched the area and spotted the coyote in the park. Several deputy marshals then created a perimeter to keep the animal contained.

The coyote was headed toward a populated part of the Katy Trail when the marshal fired one round and killed it, Ericson said.

Dallas police responded to the scene and will conduct an investigation into the incident, which is typical whenever an officer discharges their weapon in the line of duty, according to the statement.

No officers nor the person who initially reported the coyote were injured, Ericson said. The coyote’s remains will be sent to a lab for testing.
