Aurora man sentenced to 14 years in deadly Douglas County hit-and-run

An Aurora man will spend 14 years in prison after hitting and killing a pedestrian while running from police in Parker in 2023, according to court records.

A Douglas County jury found Tory Conyers, 46, guilty in February of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, vehicular homicide, first-degree assault, reckless driving, theft and eluding a police officer.

Douglas County District Court Judge Megan Brewer sentenced him Monday to 14 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections, four years less than the maximum possible sentence for those charges.

On Aug. 21, 2023, Conyers stole a shopping cart of merchandise from Walmart in Parker. Officers tried to stop his car in the parking lot, but the Aurora man fled.

Police broke off the pursuit “for safety reasons” and, moments later, Conyers ran a red light at the corner of Parker Road and Lincoln Avenue, according to a news release from the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

That’s when Conyers hit and killed 51-year-old pedestrian Jossy Fernando Pinto and fled the scene.

Parker police officers and an Aurora SWAT team arrested Conyers two days later.

“Tory Conyers chose to spend his day stealing from local businesses, then fled law enforcement before tragically striking and killing an innocent man,” Deputy DA Jon Steinberg with the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office stated in the release. “His reckless actions ended with him fleeing the scene, but justice was served in his conviction.”
