Falling crude prices will eventually translate into lower prices at the gas pump for consumers, but that doesn’t mean its all good news ― especially for Texas-based oil producers. On Monday, global crude prices sank after OPEC+ agreed over the weekend to surge production for a second month, adding to existing concerns about how tariffs may impact worldwide demand. Brent fell to $60 per barrel, while U.S. crude (West Texas Intermediate) slid by 2% to settle around $57 per barrel.“It definitely magnifies what has already become an uncertain backdrop for oil prices,” Bracewell LLP energy partner Austin Lee said. “The combination…
A second case of measles has been reported in Denton County, county health officials announced Monday. The patient is a child who recently traveled internationally, officials wrote in a news release. Their vaccination status was not immediately known. The child was not admitted to a hospital, the release said, and is recovering at home. “As we report a second case of measles in Denton County this year, we want to remind the public that vaccination is the best protection against this highly contagious disease,” said Matt Richardson, Denton County’s director of public health. “With cases on the rise globally, it’s…
In dozens of new and proposed laws, Texas has expanded the reach of state government lately. If we keep going down this path, we may need to rename our home Texafornia.Last session, lawmakers in Austin eroded the principle of local control by telling community leaders — those closer to the people who elected them — that they can’t set local rules related to important areas such as labor, agriculture, natural resources and finance. In 2015, the Legislature made it harder for Denton residents to escape noise and toxic fumes from fracking wells near their own backyards, despite the fact that most…

Raising money for the Retina Foundation of the Southwest in Dallas is deeply personal for Dan Hunt, president of FC Dallas and a member of the family sporting empire that owns the soccer team and the Kansas City Chiefs.Age-related macular degeneration and other eye-related problems don’t run in his father’s side of the family, so much as they race through it, says Hunt. The businessman is the son of the late sports icon Lamar Hunt, and the descendant of oil baron H.L. Hunt.“I’ve had a number of uncles and aunts who had AMD,” he said in an interview. “My aunt…

Under a bill filed in the Legislature, Texas could begin monitoring wastewater for substances including the abortion drug mifepristone. The legislation is part of a broader push spearheaded by anti-abortion advocates, including Students for Life of America, to classify mifepristone as an environmental pollutant. Sen. Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola, the author of the Texas wastewater bill, said the proposed bill is about environmental monitoring rather than abortion.“We want to know what’s in the water, wherever it’s coming from,” Hughes told the Dallas Morning News in a phone interview. “It’s hard to be against gathering information and finding out what chemicals are in…
