The 60th annual Academy of Country Music Awards streamed on Amazon Prime Thursday night, but those watching from home didn’t get to experience the exuberance of 12,000 people bursting into a Janis Joplin jam. The audience in the Star’s state-of-the-art venue reveled in an evening of nostalgia and new blood, with a few stars who would have once looked hopelessly out-of-place at a country music event. Nicole Kidman sat beside her man, Keith Urban. Lionel Richie reminded us he wrote Kenny Rogers’ “Lady.” And there was Jelly Roll with his face tattoos and class-clown goofiness, autographing an actual jar of…

(Michael Hogue)Jonathan Borofsky’s sculpture Walking to the Sky has been gone from Dallas for so long few remember it was ever here, towering over Nasher Sculpture Center’s garden as seven fiberglass figures — among them a little girl with pigtails and a man in suit and tie — ascended heavenward along its 100-foot-tall steel pole. Long before there was a deck park, before the area was shrouded by trees and towers, you used to be able to see the sculpture from the highway. And it was a magnificent, majestic work — “a very personal symbol,” Borofsky said Wednesday from his studio…

Basketball season is over for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks. But like so many Mavs fans, I’m still deeply frustrated personally by the trade of Luka Doncic. And as a former mayor and a business leader in our city, I know it is going to keep hurting because it came at an enormous long-term cost to Dallas. Cities are more than a collection of roads and buildings; the success of a city is driven by the intangibles … the pride of its people, its competitiveness and its image in greater society. Like all of you, I have…

AUSTIN – The Texas House gave initial approval to a bill Thursday that would ban citizens of China, Iran, North Korea and Russia from owning properties in Texas, moving the state one step closer to creating barriers for property ownership to people from countries deemed hostile. On a largely partisan vote of 85-60, the House approved the bill, making it the latest Republican-led policy once considered too extreme for the House now on a direct path to becoming law as the chamber shifts further to the right.“We must not allow oppressive regimes who actively seek to do us harm to seize…
