The autopsy confirms Sgt. Dale Nix died from gunshots during a crime intervention in Colfax.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The official autopsy for the fallen Greensboro Sergeant Dale Nix has confirmed his cause of death been on Friday, May 9.

The report found Nix was shot three times, once in the chest, arm and hand.

Sgt. Nix’s death was confirmed to be caused by a gunshot to his left arm and chest, with his two other gunshot wounds being thought to contribute to his death, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

The autopsy said there was no evidence of disease contributing to the death.

His death was officially ruled a homicide.

Additionally, after being taken to the hospital, a report from the medical examiner’s office said medical staff attempted to resuscitate him for 41 minutes.

Sgt. Nix died Dec. 30, 2023, when police said he was fatally shot while trying to stop a crime at the Sheetz gas station off Sandy Ridge Road in Colfax.

Police said two men stole beer while a woman waited in their car. Sgt. Nix was off-duty, sitting at one of the tables outside.

Investigators said Sgt. Nix saw what was happening, confronted the suspects, and that’s when one of them shot him several times.

Police arrested the suspects in Winston-Salem the next day. The 18-year-old accused of pulling the trigger faces a murder charge. The two other suspects were charged with accessory after the fact.
