AUSTIN, Texas — The annual “Barks for Beers” event is back, bringing together dog lovers and beer enthusiasts for a good cause. Mike and Max from Divine Canines, along with their furry friends Whisky, Scotch, and Navarro, shared details about this year’s event.
Divine Canines is a nonprofit organization dedicated to training therapy dogs.
“We provide free services all around Central Texas with our certified and trained therapy dogs,” explained Max. Divine Canines visit schools, assisted living centers, hospitals and go “anywhere there are people in need,” Max added.
“Barks for Beers” is a unique event where the community can enjoy a cold beer while supporting the training of these special pups. In it’s 11th year, participants can purchase their Barks for Beers glass and passport at any of the 30 participating breweries. Then, all through the month of May, bring your passport to each participating brewery for one free beer. The event not only provides a fun outing but also helps raise funds for the training of therapy dogs.
“It’s 30 craft, local beers for $30 plus tax, and this is also our number one fundraiser for the organization,” Mike said.
This year, several new breweries are joining the lineup, offering even more options for participants to explore.
“We took a risk and expanded the footprint and it worked really well,” Mike added, noting the breweries stretch far and wide across the region ensuring there’s something convenient no matter where you live.
For those interested in getting their own pups involved, Divine Canines offers opportunities for dogs to become therapy animals. An American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Certification — which is basic obedience– is required to start the 5-week training program. Divine Canines also vets owners to ensure their intentions are honest and people aren’t trying to get a vest for their dog in an effort to pass them off as a service dog.
“These are therapy dogs– not service dogs,” Max explained.
