Boys Volleyball State Tournament Roundup: Three teams move forward in opening round

No. 25 Minnechaug (3), No. 40 Excel Academy (1)

No. 25 Minnechaug showed some dominance in the second half and took down Excel Academy in four sets in the opening round of the Division II statewide boys’ volleyball tournament on Wednesday night.

After taking the first set and losing a competitive second set, the Falcons put their foot on the gas, winning sets three (25-13) and four (25-15) comfortably.

Brennan Rost had himself quite the evening, dishing up 34 assists but also defending well with 16 digs. John Correa led Minnechaug in that category with 31 digs, while Darren Duah finished with team-highs in both kills (12) and blocks (three).

The Falcons will have a more challenging task ahead as they’ll face off against No. 8 East Longmeadow on Friday at 6 p.m.
