Brockton native, No. 1 recruit to play in Boston against UConn

AJ Dybantsa will get a chance to play in front of his hometown crowd during his college career. The Brockton native and No. 1 recruit will play for BYU this fall and the Cougars will be in town for a showcase event.

BYU announced Thursday that it will play UConn on Nov. 15 this fall at TD Garden in Boston. The game is part of the Hall of Fame series and was put together by Priority Sports along with the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. So it’s a chance to see the local Huskies play against Dybantsa, the top high school recruit in the nation who grew up in the area.

Dybantsa was born in Brockton and played at St. Sebastian’s School (MA) for his freshman year. He then transferred to Prolific Prep (CA) before finishing off his high school career at Utah Prep Academy, less than four hours away from BYU. Dybantsa also reclassified to be a part of the Class of 2025 where he’s the No. 1 recruit.

Dybantsa announced his commitment to BYU on ESPN’s “First Take” back in December, which surprised plenty across the nation. He’s the highest-ranked player to ever choose the Cougars. But that’s reality in the current NIL landscape as Dybantsa already has big-time endorsement deals with Nike, Red Bull and others.

There will be plenty of anticipation not only for the showcase game but for Dybantsa as he begins his college career soon. Dybantsa is a potential pick to go No. 1 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft, though there’s still a lot of basketball and evaluation before thinking about the pros. But the 6-foot-9 forward offers a lot to like as many will keep an eye on how he looks in the college ranks this fall.
