A Massachusetts beach was named as one of the best public beaches in the U.S., according to Dr. Beach.
Dr. Stephen Leatherman, who goes by Dr. Beach, is a professor and director of the laboratory for coastal research at Florida International University.
Each year, Dr. Beach reviews, evaluates and rates beaches and coastal areas throughout the world. Each year, he releases a ranking of America’s Best Beaches.
Coast Guard Beach in Eastham on Cape Cod took the 10th spot on the list. It was the only beach in New England to place in the top 10.
A “picturesque” old Coast Guard station sits atop glacial bluffs, allowing for views of the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay, Dr. Beach said in the review about Coast Guard Beach.
In recent years, seals have moved northward from Monomoy Island Wildlife Refuge into the populated beaches, which has attracted great white sharks, the ranking added.
However, Dr. Beach said the lifeguards at Coast Guard do a terrific job of warning if these predators are present by flying red flags with shark images on those days.
