Charlotte FC loses in penalty kicks to D.C. United

This is Charlotte’s fourth straight loss in all competitions.

WASHINGTON — D.C. United goalkeeper Jordan Farr came on as a substitute and stopped four Charlotte FC penalty kick attempts, allowing his team to advance in the U.S. Open Cup.

The penalty kick situation was Farr’s first appearance for D.C. United. His teammates converted two of five penalty kick attempts, which proved enough as Charlotte scored just one penalty kick.

The match headed to penalty kicks after being tied 3-3 through the end of extra time.

The momentum shifted back and forth throughout the match, with neither team holding a lead for an extended period of time.

D.C. United’s David Schnegg scored first in the 17th minute with a spectacular left-footed shot just inside the box that hit the top corner of the net. The home team held onto that 1-0 lead at halftime.

Charlotte answered with two goals in a three-minute span in the second half. Patrick Agyemang hustled his way around D.C. defenders to score in the 58th minute before Bill Tuiloma scored off a corner-kick header in the 61st minute.

D.C. leveled things in the 86th minute with a goal from Garrison Tubbs to force extra time.

Charlotte’s Tyger Smalls scored first in extra time to give the away side a 3-2 advantage in the 95th minute.

D.C. United tied things up again, though, in the 104th minute with a goal from Jackson Hopkins.

The win advances D.C. United to the quarterfinals in the competition.

Charlotte has been on a downward spiral in May. After spending the first weeks of the season in the Top 5 of the Eastern Conference, Charlotte lost three straight MLS matches heading into Wednesday’s defeat. Charlotte is eighth in the Eastern Conference and faces Columbus (7-1-6) at home on Saturday.
