The black and blue were beaten back by the host team.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — After a smarting loss at home last week, Charlotte FC hit the road Saturday for a stretch of away matches, hurting for a win.
The team did get two goals, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Columbus Crew.
Columbus started the scoring at the 25-minute mark, with midfielder Dylan Chambost kicking it in. 14 minutes later, striker Diego Rossi found the net on a penalty kick.
Charlotte seemed to start having an answer, however, shortly after. Striker Wilfried Zaha got his own penalty kick in for the black and blue in stoppage time after the 45-minute mark. At the end of the first half, Columbus led 2-1.
Right after the break, Columbus only expanded the lead with a goal from striker Aziel Jackson, assisted by right-back Mohamed Farsi. Charlotte tried to close the gap with a goal from striker Liel Abada at the 64-minute mark, making it 3-2 in the Crew’s favor for several minutes.
But once again, Columbus responded. Striker Jacen Russell-Rowe kicked it in at the 81-minute mark, aided by wing-back Maximillian Arfsten. As the clock ticked on to 90 minutes of regulation time and six minutes of stoppage, Charlotte FC couldn’t respond.
Final from Ohio: Columbus Crew wins 4-2 over Charlotte. The black and blue have a second consecutive loss and drop three MLS standing points as well.
Charlotte FC is back in North Carolina on Tuesday, May 6, albeit over in Raleigh. They’ll take on North Carolina FC at WakeMed Soccer Park in the U.S. Open Cup’s Round of 32. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The black and blue’s next MLS meeting is on the road again, this time against Nashville SC on May 10 with an 8:30 p.m. start time.
