The house was for sale at the time.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was hurt when a house exploded and caught on fire near Freedom Park in Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood Friday morning, officials said.
Charlotte Fire confirmed firefighters responded to a “fully involved house” on Lombardy Circle in Dilworth around 6:20 a.m. A CFD spokesperson said it took about an hour for a team of 60-plus firefighters to get the fire under control. As of 8:30 a.m., the fire is contained, and crews are monitoring potential hotspots.
Neighbors in the area told WCNC Charlotte they heard an explosion around 6:15 a.m. One woman said they originally thought someone was breaking into their house because the explosion was so loud.
“We were asleep and we heard a big explosion and didn’t know what happened,” she said. “So we walked outside and saw all the smoke. We drove over here and the house was in flames.”
Another person said the explosion shook her home, a couple of blocks from Lombardy Circle. The home has a for sale sign in the front yard.
Charlotte Fire said the extent of the damage prevented a search of the home. Medic evaluated and released one person from a nearby home, officials said.
WCNC reached out to Piedmont Gas who said no natural gas leaks we’re detected in their lines.
In July 2019, one person was killed and another was injured after a home explosion caused by an internal gas leak in Ballantyne. In August 2023, the father of Tennessee Titans player Caleb Farley was killed in a Mooresville home explosion caused by a natural gas leak.
