The new ‘medical innovation’ hub from Atrium and Wake Forest will combine education, research and technology to boost economic growth and attract biotech firms.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte celebrated the grand opening of The Pearl, a new medical innovation district, on Monday.
The public-private partnership between Atrium Health and Wexford Science & Technology aims to bring together medical education, surgical training and health technology innovation. The new complex is located on McDowell Street.
At the center of The Pearl is the Charlotte campus of Wake Forest University School of Medicine, the city’s first four-year medical school. The facility also houses the exclusive North American headquarters of IRCAD, a world-renowned surgical training network.
Leaders from Advocate Health and Wexford Science & Technology joined community leaders and elected officials for tours on Monday.
The innovation district is designed to foster collaboration between medical education, research, and health technology companies. The development positions Charlotte to compete for medical talent and biotechnology companies in an increasingly competitive field, Atrium officials said.
