Dozens of teachers weren’t in class today. They were on the street, calling for answers from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Several Ardrey Kell High School teachers called out sick and lined Ardrey Kell Road with signs to protest the unexplained suspension of principal Jamie Brooks by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, a teacher told WCNC Charlotte.
Brooks was suspended with pay on May 2. Nearly a month later, CMS announced Brooks’ retirement without explanation of the suspension or the retirement.
With support from parents, students and teachers from other schools, Ardrey Kell teachers called for the reinstatement of Brooks.
Together, they donned purple shirts and held signs reading, “Bring back Brooks!” and “United for Jamie.”
Ardrey Kell was still open Monday despite the number of teachers missing.
CMS has not responded to requests for comment about the suspension or the teacher protest, but WCNC Charlotte did find out there were about 500 students present at school and the school claimed to have enough substitute teachers to cover for the missing teachers.
Teachers and parents are determined to get answer and plan to speak at this week’s Board of Education meeting on Thursday.
The last day of school for CMS is June 10.
