Widespread rain moves into the Carolinas early next week with flash flooding possible.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — WCNC Charlotte’s Weather Impact Team wants everyone in the Charlotte area to be weather alert Monday due to the widespread, heavy rain. The flash flooding risk continues Tuesday and Wednesday but becomes more isolated.

Widespread rainfall is set to move in Sunday night and continue all day Monday. Showers become more spotty Tuesday and Wednesday, but downpours are likely.

From Sunday night through Wednesday, WCNC Weather Impact Meteorologist Brittany Van Voorhees said the forecast rainfall predictions show most of the area has a good chance to see 2-4 inches of rain, with a few spots that could see 5 or more inches, especially towns west of Charlotte toward Greenville and Spartanburg.

It’s just one model run but the story remains the same: widespread rainfall moves in Sunday night – Monday morning 🌧️🌧️

When

Sunday night through Monday morning, the rain settles in across the Charlotte metro area with moments of moderate-to-heavy rainfall. Expect widespread rain on Monday, with rainfall more spotty on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Exact timing of the waves of rain will become clearer this weekend, so it’s important for people to stay weather aware as the WCNC Weather Impact Team posts updates.

Impact

Since Thursday brought a lot of rain to the area, and the ground was already saturated from last weekend’s rainfall, the flooding risk is higher than it has been in months across the Carolinas.

That means any additional rainfall after these two storms increases the risk for localized flooding, even flash flooding on Monday.

How to stay safe

Have a plan for any outdoor activities, as heavy rain could disrupt any event during these days.

Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich and the entire Weather Impact team will have regular updates on air, on the WCNC Charlotte app and on WCNC+ which you can download on your TV and stream for free 24/7.

Download WCNC+ on your on Roku, Amazon Fire TV or Apple TV, and stream the news that impacts you for free.
